SMU looking to win critical AAC matchup
The Mustangs are coming off a 40-34 win over Navy at home last week. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns, and added 74 yards and a TD on the ground. Wide receiver Dylan Goffney had a career-high 116 receiving yards and a touchdown. Safety Bryan Massey, linebacker Shanon Reid and safety Nick Roberts each had seven tackles. Linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia added six tackles, an interception and a half sack.
“They’re really good on defense. They’re well-coached, they’re really fast, they’re really physical, they’re intimidating,” SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods said on Tuesday. “I can see why people run out there and get nervous playing Cincinnati. They’ve got a little bit of a unique front, which it seems to be more and more in college football as everyone’s trying to figure out how to operate with this robber defense that’s become the fad and they’ve got their own version of it. Still, at their core, they’re a Cover 1, man-to-man football team which is different than most of those teams. The front itself provides some challenges.”
