SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee and players Kevin Jennings and Elijah Chatman spoke with the media about the Fenway Bowl loss to Boston College on Thursday.

“The way they played, they deserved to win more than we did. We didn’t make ourselves hard to beat, something we’ve done a lot this year,” Lashlee said in his postgame press conference. “And we also didn’t make plays to win the game, that’s a bad combination. When you only score 14 points. At the end of the day you look at the stats, they ran the ball well, we didn’t. And I think that’s probably the end result in the game, especially in the second half.

“They were really running the football and we weren’t able to. Again, we didn’t make ourselves hard to beat and with all the blocked kicks and all the things we did early in the game, too, wasn’t characteristic of what our team was this year.”

SMU finished the season 11-3 overall with an American Athletic Conference Championship after beating Tulane earlier this month. Now, the staff turns its attention to the ACC, where SMU joins as a member this summer.

“We didn’t get it done, so there’s no excuses. We know what kind of team’s in that locker room. Like I told them, the accomplishments of this team this year aren’t diminished. It’s a really good football team. Super proud of them. Won a championship. Did a lot of really good things,” Lashlee said. “We didn’t play very well today and Boston College played better than us, so they deserve to win. We didn’t do the things that you should do if you deserve to win. And that’s kind of what being a man is about. Like I told the guys, they’re champions and a champion has to own when we didn’t have our best stuff today and we didn’t play the way that we should have to deserved to win.”
