SMU concludes a two-game road trip at Miami on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPNU as the Mustangs look to win a third straight game. SMU head coach Andy Enfield said his team came away with a hard-fought win last time out, which was in a dramatic game at Virginia.

“It was a very exciting finish. Virginia played very well tonight,” Enfield said after the game. “They had some guys step up and made it really hard for us. We knew it would be tough. They’re very physical and they can really shoot the ball. We just tried to play as hard as we could and we’re fortunate to win at the end.”

Shooting from beyond the arc was a struggle for the Mustangs. Enfield hoped his team would’ve thrown the ball inside or tried to get to the rim more. Still, somehow SMU made plays down the stretch. With the tough night shooting against Virginia, SMU is averaging 82.9 points, which drops the team to 2nd ACC and 28th NCAA. The Mustangs are shooting 47.3% overall (3rd ACC) and 37.4% on threes (3rd ACC).

“Disappointed we only shot seven free throws,” he said. “So we didn’t get the ball enough at the rim. We took some tough shots around the rim. Then we turned it over when they double-teamed us late in the game. We did score a lot in the first half in the paint, I think 24, only 12 in the second half. We would take those 3s. We missed so many wide open threes tonight. Part of the game plan, if they’re going to double-team the post and we swing the ball and have a guy wide open, we need to shoot it.

“Unfortunately, we started out 2-for-18, and then we went 3-for-3 in the last 45 seconds. I’ve never been part of a game like that where we just couldn’t hit anything. I give our guys a lot of credit. They hung tough. Even when we got down in the last minute, they executed offensively what we were trying to do, made some big shots, and then defensively got some stops.”

The Mustangs won the first leg of the road trip, 54-52, at Virginia on a Boopie Miller 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left on Wednesday. He had the confidence to knock down the shot, even though he wasn’t the first option.

“I told the guys we’re gonna win this game,” Miller said. “I feel like everybody believed in each other that we’re gonna win this game. We came out with the win. It was supposed to go to Chuck. We was hitting him on a flare and then If we didn’t have that, we were supposed to hit Yohan — our big. Then I knew when we didn’t see anybody, I know it’s gonna be my time so my teammates believed in me, Yohan gave me the ball and I came out with the shot and hit it.”

The Mustangs are 4-2 in the ACC following Wednesday’s victory with a sweep over Virginia. SMU is the first team to sweep the Cavaliers since 2018-19 (Duke).
