SMU-BYU live updates from New Mexico Bowl
SMU and BYU are set for their matchup in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Follow along below for live updates as the Mustangs look to finish the season off with a bowl win.

1st Quarter
SMU opened with a long drive, which fizzled in the redzone. After a BYU penalty that helped SMU move into BYU territory, the Mustangs used Moochie Dixon to get into the redzone. Collin Rogers hit the field goal to take the lead.
BYU turned around and did the exact same thing, driving into the redzone. On a 3rd and goal from the 5, SMU called timeout. After the timeout, Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters kept it to the 1. On 4th and goal, Maiava-Peters punched it in to take a 7-3 lead. The Cougars scored on an 11-play, 73-yard drive that took 5:45 off the clock.
SMU continued to lean on Tyler Lavine early on the 2nd drive. On 3rd and 10, Mordecai found Jordan Kerley for a 1st down with a gain of 19. Lavine carried back-to-back times for a 1st down to the BYU 25. Camar Wheaton entered to help SMU into the redzone. Mordecai found Roderick Daniels on a flat route for a touchdown, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 3:53 off the clock. SMU took a 10-7 lead with 2:16 to go in the 1st quarter.
BYU took over and after three plays, the Cougars were short of the 1st down. Maiava-Peters kept it on a keeper for the 1st down on 4th and 1.
2nd Quarter
SMU’s defense settled in and forced a punt, which led to the ball being at the SMU 31 after a facemask call. SMU didn’t get much going with the drive fizzling out and the Mustangs punting it away to the BYU 20.
Maiava-Peters hit Isaac Rex for a 1st down with a gain of 27. After a Chris Brooks run, Maiava-Peters picked up a 1st down with a gain of 6 to the SMU 42. On 3rd and 4, Hinckley Ropati picked up a 1st down to the SMU 30. After an incomplete pass and a loss of 2, BYU faced 3rd and 12. Maiava-Peters scrambled for a gain of 12, picking up the 1st down to the SMU 20. The BYU drive fizzled and Jacob Oldroyd hit a 31-yard field goal to tie it at 10. The BYU drive went 14 plays, 66 yards in 7:11.
SMU picked up a 1st down on its drive, but the drive fizzled. SMU punted it away and BYU took over at its own 7 after a facemask penalty. BYU ran out the clock in the 1st half with the game tied at 10 and the Cougars getting the ball to start the 2nd half.
3rd Quarter
SMU forced a three-and-out to start the 2nd half. The Mustangs did the same, opening with a three-and-out. After a long Maiava-Peters run, Shanon Reid intercepted him to give SMU the ball at its own 34.
Lavine ran for three yards to open the drive. Lavine picked up the first down with a 14-yard run. Daniels picked up a 1st down with a run of his own into BYU territory then ran for another 1st. The run was called a fumble on the field, but his elbow was down before the ball came out at the BYU 32.

Mordecai was intercepted by Ben Bywater, returning it 76 yards for the touchdown, giving BYU a 17-10 lead. SMU went three and out. BYU took over and picked up where it left out, punishing SMU on the ground.
BYU worked it down the field, culminating in a 24-10 lead thanks to Brooks breaking a 22-yard touchdown run. That capped a 9-play, 82-yard drive that took 5:42 off the clock.
4th Quarter
SMU took over and hit Moochie Dixon for a big gain of 35 into BYU territory. After a Lavine 1st down run, Kerley picked up a gain of 5. Lavine again carried, leading to a 3rd and 2. Lavine picked up the first down then scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to cap a 11-play, 75-yard drive in 3:42.
SMU got a stop, forcing a three and out and the punt went for a touchback.
SMU opened with a run by Wheaton then Daniels picked up a 1st down on a run then he caught a key 3rd down pass to move the chains again. SMU’s drive fizzled though as the Mustangs went for it on 4th down and Mordecai was sacked, turning it over on downs.
SMU’s defense forced a 4th and 3 for BYU at its own 46. The Cougars punted it away to SMU, landing at its own 12.
SMU had to go for it on 4th and 1 and Austin Upshaw picked up the 1st down. Mordecai worked SMU down the field, hitting Upshaw for a big gain and Daniels for a big gain to the BYU 12 with 20 seconds left.
Mordecai hit Kerley in the back of the endzone for a touchdown with 8 seconds left. The Mustangs went for the 2-point try and Mordecai was down short of the goalline. After the onside kick was recovered by BYU, the Cougars took a knee and came away with the 24-23 win.
