SMU cornerback Jahari Rogers will reportedly be ending his season early and sit out the rest of the 2024 season. While the Mustangs are 4-1, the former Arlington High standout is in a bit of a reserve role.

Per Mike Roach at 247Sports, Rogers will redshirt the remainder of this year. He’s the latest player in college football to preserve an extra campaign’s worth of eligibility with a redshirt.

Rogers has appeared in just three games this season for the Mustangs. In those appearances, he has posted three tackles, three pass deflections, and a forced fumble. Most of that production came in the team’s win over TCU to claim the Iron Skillet.

Going into the season, SMU cornerbacks coach Rickey Hunley was hoping for his group to step up after losing two starters in Charles Woods and Chris Megginson to graduation. Texas A&M transfer Deuce Harmon along with veterans Brandon Crossley, Jaelyn Davis-Robinson and AJ Davis are the main corners at this stage for the Mustangs.

“Traditionally, I’ve been a 2-3 guys on game day type of deal,” Hunley said. “And last year you get in a situation where we’ve got two guys that can take every single rep. … If a game calls for us to be in that rotation, I would say we’re not afraid to do that. We feel confident and comfortable. … We want to have some guys that kind of separate, that can just be that shut down guy or shut down guys. But if it takes all of us, it takes all of us. We’ll keep swinging with everybody, if we need to.”

Rogers has a lot of experience, but has never truly come into his own at the position after converting from high school quarterback when he arrived at the University of Florida in 2020 as a four-star prospect. He transferred to SMU following that lone season in Gainesville, Fla.
