SMU climbs into Top 10 of College Football Playoff rankings
After sitting at No. 13 last week, the SMU Mustangs now sit at No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings revealed Tuesday evening on ESPN. Fresh off clinching a spot in the ACC Championship and a wild weekend of college football chaos, the Mustangs are in an even stronger position to make the 12-team playoff.
SMU crushed Virginia last week on the road, 33-7, improving to 10-1 and 7-0 in ACC play. The Mustangs will face either Clemson or Miami in the ACC Championship on Dec. 7.
Behind SMU is Alabama at No. 13, Clemson at No. 12, Boise State at No. 11 and Indiana at No. 10. Right in front of SMU is No. 8 Tennessee, No. 7 Georgia No. 6 Miami and No. 5 Miami.
For SMU fans and head coach Rhett Lashlee, this excitement is what the new 12-team playoff is all about. Plenty of games have College Football Playoff implications this weekend and the Mustangs are hoping to position themselves in a good spot in the event they need an at-large bid.

“Look, that’s what makes it exciting for our fan for fans of college football now is that there are 12 teams again and every week that the regular season matters. You know, 20-plus games matter every week instead of three. And so we’re no different. Like we’d already won, which is great to play early and fly home. And yeah, you’re watching games going, ‘It would be better for the Mustangs if that team won, and It’d be better for Mustangs if that team won.’ In the first two weeks of the playoff, the team we said it’d be better for the Mustangs if they won wasn’t winning, and we’ve been in that position where, so far, our resume hadn’t been good enough.
“So, we needed some help, you know, and our guys have done a good job controlling what they can. Hopefully, we’re continuing to make our resume better to where the committee says no, no, they belong in the 12-team playoff.”
Closing out the season at Ford Stadium in style with a win over Cal at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2 would only add to what could be a perfect regular season in ACC play for SMU.
