SMU DL Daemian Wimberly enters NCAA Transfer Portal
SMU defensive lineman Daemian Wimberly entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after one season on the Hilltop, he announced Monday night. The Austin, Texas native saw action against Prairie View A&M this season as he redshirted.
“I would like to first give glory to God for blessing me with the ability and opportunity to play the sport I love at the next level,” Wimberly said on Instagram. “Secondly, I want to thank Coach Lashlee and Coach Thibbs, and the loving SMU family for allowing me to pursue my academic and sports aspirations at SMU. I am grateful for the lifelong relationships I have made with my teammates. After prayers and discussions with my loved ones, I would like to announce that I am officially entering my name in the NCAA transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining.”
Coming out of Vandegrift High, he led his team to a state championship appearance as a senior. He notched 81 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 2022, helping his team to a 14-2 mark.
The strong three-star prospect was a defensive end in SMU’s scheme with the plan to grow into an interior defensive lineman. Instead, he’s moving on to the next stage of his career.

“His upside is just tremendous,” SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons told On3 when Wimberly signed. “When you look at his length and those measurables, he’s a guy that’s going to be a 3-technique that grows into that body more and more. Basketball kid. Really athletic. I think he’s got a chance to be one of the most athletic 3-techniques we’ve had here in a real long time.”
Wimberly ranks on the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, as the No. 81 defensive lineman nationally and No. 131 prospect in Texas. On3 is even higher on him, ranking him as the No. 54 defensive lineman and No. 76 prospect in Texas.
