SMU falls to BYU, 18-15

SMU OLB Isaiah Smith talks BYU, first two games for Mustangs

SMU hosted BYU on Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. The Mustangs fell short against the Cougars, 18-15. Here’s how the game unfolded:

SMU will get the ball to start the game as they debut their new red uniforms for the first time tonight.

SMU is forced to punt after a three-and-out to start the game. A solid punt from Isaac Pearson will put BYU at their 35-yard line for their first drive.

BYU converts a 3rd and 9 to keep their opening drive alive. Just moments after picking up the first down, Elijah Roberts forces and recovers a fumble which gives the Mustangs great field positions.

After forcing the turnover, the SMU offense stalls and has its second three-and-out of the game. The score is still 0-0 with 10:39 to go in the 1st quarter.

Kody Epps with a nice catch and run for BYU puts them into SMU territory.

BYU is now inside the red zone after a pass completion and a roughing the passer call against SMU. 1st and 10 at the SMU 16.

On the very next play, BYU cashes in a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead over the Mustangs. Pass from Retzlaff caught by Ta’ase for the Cougars.

Kevin Jennings checks into the game at Quarterback for SMU and completes his first pass for a 1st down.

SMU moving the ball well with Jennings in at QB. Mustangs also gifted free yards after an unnecessary hit out of bounds on the Cougars. Mustangs are aggressive and go for it on 4th and 1 and come up empty-handed. The Cougar defense holds on a 4th and 1, and BYU still leads 7-0 with 1:45 to go in the 1st quarter.

At the end of the 1st quarter, the score remains 7-0, BYU leads.

Colin Rogers gets SMU on the board by drilling a 53-yard field goal, a new career-long! Mustangs still trail 7-3 with 13:06 to go in the 2nd quarter.

The SMU defense does its job and forces a quick three-and-out to give the ball back to the Mustang offense.

Preston Stone comes back in at QB and the pressure gets to him on all three plays, forcing the Mustangs to punt the ball back to BYU with 10:47 to go in the 1st half.

Kevin Jennings checks back in at QB for SMU. The offense is moving down the field and starting to get into a rhythm. 1st and 10 for SMU at the BYU 36. SMU settles for three points again as Colin Rogers drills another 50+ yard field goal, this one’s good from 52 yards. SMU now trails by one, 7-6 with 6:03 to go in the 2nd quarter.

SMU defense is right back on the field after Brandon Crossley touches the BYU punt, and the Cougars recover the live ball.

The SMU defense is on FIRE tonight, stuffing Miles Davis on a 4th and 1. SMU offense takes over at their 29-yard line.

Jennings with a couple of nice throws put SMU in the red zone. The drive stalls and Colin Rogers once again nails another field goal to give SMU their first lead of the night. Mustangs lead 9-7 with :42 seconds to go in the half.

HALFTIME: SMU’s defense holds strong to end the half and the Mustangs lead 9-7 thanks to Colin Rogers.

SMU’s defense starts the second half with fireworks! CJ Sanders put pressure on the BYU QB and forces the interception – caught by Kobe Wilson.

Colin Rogers continues his perfect night, making his 4th field goal of the game. SMU tacks on three more, extending their lead to 12-7. 9:28 to go in the 3rd.

The defense is doing its thing out there, forcing another three-and-out against the BYU offense.

SMU’s second drive of the half is held back with penalties and they punt the ball to BYU. The Cougars start their next drive near midfield.

BYU gets aggressive and goes for it on 4th and 2. The bold decision pays off for the Cougars in the form of a touchdown. BYU converts the 2-point conversion and now leads 15-12 with 1:15 to go in the 3rd quarter.

End of the 3rd quarter: BYU leads 15-12. Mustang football to start the 4th.

Moments after Brashard Smith acrobatically avoids turning the ball over, Jennings throws an interception inside the 5-yard line. BYU ball with 13:58 to go in the 4th quarter.

Another turnover! Jared Harrison-Hunte reads the screen to perfection for the interception. SMU takes over inside the 5-yard line.

SMU gives the ball right back to the visitors. Brashard Smith fumbles the ball and BYU has it with 11:30 to go in the game.

SMU’s defense rises up to the occasion yet again, forcing another three-and-out.

Colin Rogers is 5/5 tonight and is single-handedly keeping SMU in this game. 15-15 with 6:17 to go in the 4th.

BYU converts a 4th down on their way re-claiming the lead with a field goal. Cougars lead 18-15 with 1:58 to go in regulation.

SMU turns it over on four plays. BYU will get the ball at the 40-yard line and come out with the win.

Cougars come into Dallas and win this one, 18-15.

SMU now has a bye next week to try and regroup. The Mustangs take on TCU on September 21 at 4 p.m. on the CW.
