The SMU Mustangs rank No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings revealed Tuesday night on ESPN. Rhett Lashlee’s team will face Clemson on Saturday in the ACC Championship with a chance to seal its bye as the ACC Champion.

Arizona State is at No. 15, South Carolina is at No. 14, Ole Miss is at No. 13, Miami is at No. 12, Alabama is at No. 11, Boise State is at No. 10 and Indiana is at No. 9. Ahead of SMU is Tennessee at No. 7 and at No. 6, Ohio State, which fell at home to unranked Michigan over the weekend.

If this was the final ranking, SMU would draw the winner of Alabama vs. Notre Dame, which would be the host school as the 4th-ranked team in the playoff rankings.

Regardless of what happens Saturday, Lashlee feels like his team deserves to be in the final College Football Playoff field.

“I don’t think I’m going to do any lobbying really, because I don’t know if that would matter. But I do hope that the committee continues to value our resume and our total body of work,” Lashlee said this week. “I mean, I think the reality of it is there’s two power four teams that have gone undefeated in their conference. It’s us and Oregon. And to me, that should mean a lot. We won the ACC regular season championship outright. Going undefeated and the way we did it and how we did it, I think it’s important and we played 10 power four games.

“I mean, we played a 10-win Big 12 team and an 8-4 big 12 team. No one else did that plus an eight-game conference schedule. So, I think that based on what we’ve heard and what we’ve been told, I would like to feel good about it.”

There’s plenty of talent on SMU’s roster, which went unbeaten in the ACC play this season, which was the program’s first in the league.

Nineteen members of the SMU football team were named to All-ACC teams, the conference announced on Tuesday. Three players earned spots on the first team, with two landing on the second team and three being added to the Third Team. In addition, 11 were named to the honorable mention list.
