SMU OC Casey Woods talks CFP matchup vs Penn State
SMU OC Casey Woods spoke to the media last week, breaking down the CFP rankings drama and previewing the matchup vs Penn State.
On where he was when he found out that SMU made the CFP: “Well, you’re probably not going to believe this, so I was in church, and you know we got back at like 5 a.m. And so I went to sleep for a couple of hours, and my kids started scrambling around the house, and I knew the selection show started at like 11, but they said it ran until three, so like I didn’t know if it was going to be announced early or late and I really didn’t sit there, and you know agonize over it I mean even though you’re at peace a little bit. So I was sitting in church about three-quarters of the way through the sermon my pocket started buzzing. So I thought man it’s either the end of the world or we got in so I had about 100 text messages when we got out, and it was an exciting time it’s fun to be a part of that.”
On what it means to be able to coach another game with this team: “Man, I’m so happy for them. So happy for Coach Lashlee and our staff, and I mean really thinking back to the vision that we had. It’s been three years really this weekend since we took the job, and we went and watched a guy named Kevin Jennings play a high school football game up at Frisco Star, you know, and that’s three years ago this weekend, and so man to see what we’ve been able to put together in three years and the vision coach had and The players we’ve been able to go out and get, and they’ve bought into our vision But really led by you know that original core of Dallas kids that came in here and believed in what it was that we were seeing and thought. And I am happy for the people that SMU, you know, it’s for everybody that I talked to has talked about all the years of trouble that they had to put up with, and it’s just been such a strange such an empty feeling in place for so many decades, you know, and to watch even all those little people going back to Coach Jones and coach Morris and even coach Dykes and those guys that really invested in this place to get it pushed in the right direction and then to see our donors in our group and you know Obviously Rick Hart coming in here our president Dr. Turner as long as they’ve been here and just to see everyone that’s poured so much into this thing and they have a guy like Rhett that had great vision hit it a good time And man, that’s it. That’s a big, long answer to say the culmination of all that. You can imagine it was quite a feeling for these guys to be able to experience something like this.”
