SMU Mustangs quarterback Preston Stone is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, but will remain with the team during its College Football Playoff run, he announced on Tuesday.

Stone penned a letter to Mustang Nation when the news was revealed.

“Playing at SMU has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Stone said on Instagram. “Spending my Saturday afternoons at Ford Stadium as a kid forged a dream of one day wearing the Red and Blue, and it overwhelms me with gratitude that my childhood dream was fulfilled. Thank you to my family, the city of Dallas, every SMU fan, my coaches, and all of my teammates for allowing me to create lifelong memories on the Hilltop. It has been an incredible ride playing for this school, and I’m very grateful for every blessing SMU has provided me.

“This December, I will be graduating from the Cox School of Business and entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. The goal set out at the beginning of this season was to win a National Championship, and that goal is still within reach. I plan on keeping my commitment to my teammates to finish the remainder of this season as a Mustang and doing whatever I can to help us win it all.”

Stone began the season as the starting quarterback for SMU, but that changed when head coach Rhett Lashlee opted to start Kevin Jennings moving forward after the BYU game. Stone helped the Mustangs win an AAC Championship last year and is one of the faces of the “New SMU,” as Lashlee called it last year.

Stone’s last pass in Ford Stadium went for a touchdown to Key’Shawn Smith, extending SMU’s big lead over Cal and creating a special moment as the Mustangs wrapped up an unbeaten ACC regular season.

“Preston Stone’s a winner, he’s a champion. He led us last year,” SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said in his postgame press conference. “The way he’s handled everything this year is a big reason for our success. He’s got a bright future ahead. He’s going to graduate in December. He’s a Mustang for life. I think our whole entire fan base appreciates him. I think it was really cool for his last snap and pass in Ford Stadium to be a touchdown. That was pretty cool.”

The quarterback spent four seasons with SMU. Over that time, Stone accumulated 4,030 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 287 yards and six touchdowns, as well.

Preston Stone played high school football at Dallas (Tex.) Parish Episcopal School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 123 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Stone will be one of the top available quarterbacks in the transfer portal this offseason. Quarterbacks are valued at a premium, and someone with as much experience and success as him would be welcomed at a myriad of different schools.
