SMU QB Tanner Mordecai enters NCAA Transfer Portal
SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai walked on Senior Day Saturday against Memphis with plans to enter NFL Draft, he announced after practice last month.
Mordecai has one year of eligibility remaining in college. On Thursday, he added the twist that a return to college is open, entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Matt Zenitz.
“I’ve had a frickin’ blast,” Mordecai said at the time. “For going from not playing for three years to going out last year and kind of just letting it rip all year, I had a freakin’ blast. I made some of my best friends of my life here and this year has been nothing short of awesome too.
“I know we’ve had our ups and downs, but it’s been a blast. Playing every Saturday with this group is special. Maybe our record’s not what we want it, but I love these dudes, they play hard and they’re everything I could ask for.”

In 2022, Mordecai finished with 288-of-444 for 3,524 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 12 games. He was injured against Cincinnati and missed SMU’s win over Tulsa this year.
In 2021, Tanner Mordecai started all 12 games for the Mustangs, his first year as a starter at the college level after transferring in from Oklahoma. He threw for 3,628 yards, 39 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 67.8 percent of his passes.
