SMU Football will host its annual Spring Game at a different venue on Friday at 6:30 p.m., heading to Highland Park High School with construction underway at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. on the north (home) side of the stadium and admission is free. Seating will be available in the north side bleachers. Concessions will be offered; therefore, outside food and drink is not permitted. Parking is free in the garage off Westchester Street as well as in the H Lot off Westchester. Street parking is also available.

SMU’s avoided injuries for the most part this spring. With Tuesday’s practice behind the team, there’s just one more showcase to go to get through healthy.

“Obviously from a coaching standpoint, we just want to be healthy. We’ve had a couple guys get nicked up, nobody that should miss the season or anything at this point. So if we get out of these last few practices healthy and then get the other guys back that had the offseason surgeries, that’s kind of check one for us,” SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said. “But I think it’s just continuing to build the foundation. Offensively, we’ve got to get back to playing fast, I think we’re running the ball better, can you protect football. Defensively I think you can see, at least it feels like, there’s a lot of improvement.”

There are numerous new faces on campus for the Mustangs. It’s a part of getting the basics down before fall camp rolls around in a few months.

“We’ve been very simple on both sides of the ball from a schematic standpoint, by design, so they can play and trying to get those foundations set of running to the ball, tackling, leveraging the ball on defense. Those kinds of things,” Lashlee said. “So it’s kind of a boring answer. I just hope we can continue to build on the things that matter that will show up in the fall and stay healthy.”

SMU Football ready to host numerous recruits

Friday night will be a good opportunity for the Mustangs to host numerous recruits. The change of venue is a sign SMU’s investing in facilities, but the staff will be ready to continue its push in DFW and Texas recruiting.

“As you can see, guys have been coming on campus, they’ve been showing up,” running backs coach Khenon Hall said. “Dallas is home for a lot of these kids and they want to be able to take this program, put it on their back and take it to the next level. It’s been a good response. As you know, we’re still a Group of 5 program and they want to do Power Five. I think what coach Lashlee is building here and the family atmosphere and us embracing this Dallas brand and home and building a relationship with those guys.

“I think they love what we’re doing here as far as the relationship piece and they want to be a part of what we’re doing going forward. And they know we’ve got an elite offense, so a lot of offensive guys want to come play for us.”
