An opportunity presented itself and SMU took advantage. With news that the Southeastern Conference was directing Oklahoma to postpone a home-and-home with future league opponent Georgia, SMU filled its non-conference schedule spot.

SMU will head to Norman on Sept. 9, 2023 to face the Sooners and a return game in Dallas will be played on Sept. 11, 2027, it was announced on Wednesday.

It’ll be the first time since 1995 that the programs will face each other. The Sooners hold a 5-1-1 edge over SMU in the series. While the Sooners aren’t a traditional former Southwest Conference foe, the schools were in the league together from 1918-19 before the Sooners left the league. They did not face each other during those years, meeting in 1925 for the first time.

SMU moves fast to line up matchup against Oklahoma

Oklahoma was in a pinch for a game and the regional matchup is a welcomed one for SMU. SMU has Louisiana Tech at home, a road matchup against TCU and an open date to fill on its 2023 schedule.

“We recognize the original excitement in hosting Georgia next season and traveling to Knoxville in 2024, and the short-term disappointment this news may bring, but the circumstances obviously dictated a change in our schedules,” said OU Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione. “The good news is that future SEC schedules will provide a reasonable rotation whereby Georgia and Tennessee come to Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, and we will also play on those great campuses.”

“And we’re grateful to be able to fill the Georgia scheduling gap with the series against SMU, a program that has won 25 games over the last three seasons. Special thanks to SMU Athletics Director Rick Hart for his cooperation during this shift in scheduling.”

SMU’s only win over Oklahoma came in 1968 in the Bluebonnet Bowl, 28-27. At the time, it was the largest crowd to see a game indoors at the Houston Astrodome. SMU stopped Sooners backup quarterback Mickey Ripley on the two-point try and the Sooners missed a potential game-winning field goal at the buzzer.
