SMU Football will face TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet on Sat., Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. CT on FS1, the schools announced on Monday.

SMU won two straight in 2019 and 2021 with TCU head coach Sonny Dykes Dykes at the helm and the first with now SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee as his offensive coordinator). TCU held off a late SMU push to win in Dallas, 42-34, in 2022.

The Horned Frogs lead the rivalry 52-42-7.

The matchup looms as TCU opted this offseason to pause the rivalry game between the two programs after the conclusion of the 104th edition in 2025. TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said the school would “possibly” evaluate resuming the game with SMU now headed to the ACC, a power conference.

“It’s disappointing for our student-athletes, our alumni and our fanbase. It’s disappointing for Metroplex football fans,” SMU athletic direcotr Rick Hart told The Dallas Morning News. “This is a rivalry that has spanned a century-plus. It is the Battle for the Iron Skillet, Dallas versus Ft. Worth, Doak Walker versus Sammy Baugh, the Pony Express versus LaDainian Tomlinson, and more. It’s the game Grantland Rice, the famous sportswriter, called the ‘Game of the Century’ in 1935. It is part of the very fabric of college football. Our hope is that TCU will resume the series, as we at SMU want to continue this rivalry in perpetuity.”

This week, SMU faces Prairie View A&M in Gerald J. Ford Stadium at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+ while the Horned Frogs are at Houston at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.
