SMU throttles Navy on Senior Day to punch ticket to AAC Championship
SMU Football rolled past Navy on Senior Day to earn a 59-14 win, punching a ticket to the AAC Championship Game against Tulane next week. Here’s how the Mustangs improved to 10-2 overall with the blow-by-blow recap.
SMU took the ball to start the game and the Mustangs made quick work of the Navy defense. Preston Stone hit RJ Maryland on back-to-back passes to get the Mustangs inside the 10-yard line of Navy. After a Camar Wheaton run to the 1-yard line, Tyler Lavine punched it in for the 7-0 lead.
After Navy was forced to punt, SMU took the ball and Stone hit Moochie Dixon for a 47-yard gain to Navy territory. Stone then hit Jordan Hudson for a gain to the redzone. After a run, Stone hit Dixon for a 15-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-0 lead with 8:57 to go in the 1st quarter.
After stopping Navy again, Stone hit Key’Shawn Smith on a screen pass that went to midfield. Wheaton continued to run well before Stone hit Hudson for a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 with 5:26 to go in the 1st quarter.
After stopping Navy again, Stone hit Dixon for another big play then threw a back shoulder ball in the endzone for him to haul in for the 28-7 lead. Navy got some luck on its next drive as the Mustangs stopped the Midshipmen, but Jonathan McGill muffed a punt at the 1-yard line and Navy recovered. Navy scored on the next play to make it 28-7, SMU.

After SMU was stopped by Navy, the Mustangs punted and recovered a muffed punt in the endzone to make it 35-7 with 14:12 to go in the 1st half. SMU’s defense forced another Navy punt on the next drive. SMU took over and Stone hit Romello Brinson for a big gain. Lavine punched another one in to make it 42-7.
SMU forced another punt and took over on offense. A brutal injury to Stone forced him to be carted off the field and Kevin Jennings took over at quarterback. Jennings led a drive that ended with Lavine’s third touchdown run of the day to make it 49-7.
After Navy scored its first offensive touchdown with a Braxton Woodson 67-yard touchdown run, SMU kicker Collin Rogers put the Mustangs up 52-14 going into halftime. On Navy’s first drive of the 2nd half, Isaiah Nwokobia returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown to make it 59-14.
SMU finished off the game with backups in, winning 59-14.
