Like it has the first two games, Lashlee said BYU will likely see both of SMU’s quarterbacks, Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings. BYU defensive end Isaiah Bagnah said it’s all about their own preparation and performance.
“You don’t really know exactly what you’re going to get, especially when it comes to the scouting report and how you prepare,” Bagnah said on Monday. “When we deal with something like that, you have to be more intentional and purposeful with your own prep and doing what you do best as a defensive whole. We have to know our identity and how we come to play the game. At the start of last game we talked about not wanting to be a thermometer, but to be a thermostat. We want to come in and set the tone regardless of who we’re playing.”

SMU faces a BYU quarterback in Jake Retzlaff who is making his sixth career start when he gets on the field in Dallas. After beating out former blue-chip quarterback Gerry Bohanon, he’s building his confidence.
“The competition makes everybody better,” Retzlaff said this week. “Everyone’s attention to detail and intensity was a little higher. I believe that for sure because of the competition in all of fall camp and all of the off season. The preparation is for sure there because it pushed me to be more prepared than ever in order to win the job because I was going up against a really good quarterback on the other side of the competition. We are all ready to go. I think we did a really good job not having those first game mistakes, the formation penalties or play clock stuff or substitution stuff. We did a really good job.”
Retlaff threw for over 300 yards while running back LJ Martin scored two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air in the win where BYU rolled up 527 total yards.
SMU’s looking for its first win ever over BYU. The two teams last faced off in the New Mexico Bowl in Lashlee’s first season. The Mustangs went for the 2-point conversion to win the game in the final seconds, but failed to convert, falling 24-23.
