Mustangs coming off home win over HCU

The Mustangs beat Houston Christian 59-7 on Saturday in its home opener. In its first home game as an ACC squad, the Mustangs rolled up 595 total yards to HCU’s 157.

SMU’s start against HCU was much better than Week Zero. The home team’s lead was 42-7 with five minutes left in the first half. On a night when the university opened the new Garry Weber EndZone Complex, it was a dominant showing.

“We knew it was going to be everything we thought it would be and more for our players,” Lashlee said Saturday. “It’s exceeded all expectations. And then the crowd, I mean, I think it was a really good crowd for first home game, you know, for this setting and we’re excited about the games to come. We got three straight home games against three big-time opponents and at least from what I’m told they’re all pretty close to being sold out. So we’re gonna be excited.”

BYU started off its season with a 41-13 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis at Lavell Edwards Stadium on Saturday night, the fifth consecutive season-opening win for the Cougars.

“It was a lot of fun to play football again,” BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff said. “The guys around me played incredible at every position. The running backs ran the ball well today for 170 yards. Five hundred and twenty seven yards of offense, that is a total team effort if I’ve ever heard of one.”
