SMU vs. Virginia: How to watch, channel, streaming
The SMU Mustangs are on the brink of clinching an appearance in the ACC title game in their first season in the conference on Saturday if they can pull off a road victory against the Virginia Cavaliers. Virginia, which is holding its Senior Day celebrations on Saturday, is looking to stave off the red hot Mustangs and clinch an accolade of their own – a bowl game berth.
SMU (9-1) held steady at No. 13 in the nation in this week’s AP Top 25 and also came in at No. 13 in the new College Football Playoff rankings after taking down Boston College 38-28 last weekend. Meanwhile, Virginia sits at 5-5 and the Cavs are fresh off of a 35-14 loss to top-10 Notre Dame.
Despite what Virginia head coach Tony Elliott deemed just “three minutes of really bad football” from quarterback Anthony Colandrea that saw him toss three interceptions in three straight drives in the loss against the Fighting Irish, the team plans to start him again against the Mustangs who rank in the top 10 in takeaways this season. SMU could also face backup Tony Muskett who closed out last week’s game with a 16-play scoring drive.
Despite putting his team in a position to win the conference title through 10 games, SMU skipper Rhett Lashlee isn’t letting the Mustangs get ahead of their skis.
“We have two games left, the job’s not done,” Lashee said this week. “We all understand what’s in front of us and what opportunities we have. But if you sit around and think about that for too long, you won’t stay present. So, we have put ourselves in this position.
“It’s what we wanted to do. We talked about before the season; we wanted to prove we belong and try to put yourself in position in November to be playing for something, and we are. So that part’s accomplished. Now we gotta go finish. We gotta go finish the deal. We get an opportunity that Saturday, so trying to stay focused on that.”
