SMU vs. Virginia: How to watch, channel, streaming
Before Rhett Lashlee’s Mustang football team kicks off against Clemson in Charlotte on Saturday night in the ACC championship game, Andy Enfield’s squad will begin its journey to the postseason with the first ACC matchup of the 2024 slate.
SMU hosts the Virginia Cavaliers to tipoff the new era in the ACC after starting the season with a 7-2 record. Virginia, still 0-0 in the ACC, sits at 5-3 on the year with losses to current top-25 programs Tennessee, St. John’s and Florida.
Tipoff is set for 1:15 p.m. CT in Moody Coliseum. The game will broadcast on the CW with Thom Brennaman and Mike Gminski on the call.
The matchup in Moody Coliseum will be SMU’s second all-time against Virginia. The last time they met was in the Corpus Christi Challenge in 2013. SMU lost that game 76-73. On Saturday afternoon, however, the Mustangs are favored to win. According to ESPN’s matchup predictor, Enfield’s team has a 82.4% chance to clinch the win in their ACC home opener.

Earlier in the week, the Mustangs took down Alabama State by putting seven players in double figures. The final score of 101-72 marked SMU’s third time over 100 points this season. Despite playing just 15 minutes, Kario Oquendo led all Mustangs scorers with 20 points after going 7-for-8 from the field and 2-3 from behind the three-point line.
The Mustangs’ pace and lethal offense have carried them to the 7-2 record thus far, but Enfield believes Virginia will be a good test on Saturday night given how the Cavs like to slow the game down.
“Well, I think we’re second or first in the ACC in scoring,” Enfield said after the Alabama St. win. “And we like to push the pace and spread the floor and really feel it. Try to get a great shot quickly or early in the offense, but take a great shot. Virginia is more methodical and they play at a slower pace, but very efficient, very good. So there’s a lot of ways to try to win a college basketball game, and there’ll be probably two different styles on Saturday.”
As they begin ACC play, the Mustangs are elite in several categories. They lead the conference in rebound margin (+10.3) while ranking third in shooting percentage (48.1%) and three-point shooting percentage (37.5%), and second in scoring (88.3 ppg) and assists per game (16.4).
