SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods met with the media to preview the Wasabi Fenway Bowl against Boston College on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT on ESPN. Check out the video and some of the quotes from Woods on the Golden Eagles.

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings made his first career start in the American Athletic Conference Championship against Tulane. Despite three turnovers, Jennings showed what the coaching staff liked about him coming out of Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff High.

“It was awesome, fun, great moment for him, I think, to be part of this,” Woods said. “Great moment for our team and great moment for SMU and everybody that’s affiliated with that. And I think that those things that initially drew us to him about being a quarterback that wanted to play quarterback. And I think some of the first things that we saw that were attractive in that first high school game we went to two years ago was him on third down, stepping up and moving around in the pocket and delivering throws that were a little bit off schedule, but he was aware, you know?

“There’s a difference between a kid that as the rush comes upon him, there’s a reaction to the rush, and their eyes go immediately down, and then somebody that can manage that rush and then still keep managing the offense the way that you need to, and he certainly did that. To be able to put it all together, like I said, I don’t think we were surprised. I think it was just a validation of what it is that we believed about him and what he believes about himself.”

Jennings now has weeks to prepare for Boston College and Woods said with the media that should allow him more confidence. Jennings has shown over the course of his career to have that composure in big moments.

“Obviously, we saw flashes and glimpses in the second half versus Tulsa last year and the drive right before the half against Memphis,” Woods said. “Then I was obviously Rice this year. It just was kind of this slow buildup for it to finally be his time. Then, shoot, you start off the game as bad of two plays as you can start off the game having and he went right back out there and moved us down the field. When he’s got that kind of calmness and that kind of collected, that keeps everybody on the sidelines confident.”
