SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods met with the media on Tuesday to look back on the Rice game and preview the matchup against North Texas.
“They’re pretty basic. I think they’re Year 1 of what it is they do,” Woods said of SMU’s opponent. “This guy’s an odd robber guy that came out of the Iowa State tree who kind of originated it a few years ago. And so they really are not super multiple with what they do. They’re sound and they’re aligned and they’re precise and they’re well coached. They run to the ball and they play hard and they do some things. They’ve got some pressure looks, but that’s not what they try to do.
“They try to defend you and they try to get you on the ground and tackle you. And they’ve got the robber, kind of the free runner in both alleys. We saw kind of a version of it versus TCU, that’s probably the closest comparison that we have.”
SMU kicks off on Friday against North Texas at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2 looking to remain unbeaten in league play and move one step closer to an AAC Championship. The Mustangs are 7-2 on the year and are sitting unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference at 5-0.
