SMU Football is in fall camp ahead of the 2023 season. This year’s version of the Mustangs features 25 transfers coming in as well as the high school additions. Take a look how the Mustangs looked on Day 2 of practices in our video below.

During fall camp, the Mustangs will be working to see how the team looks. Entering Year 2 of the Rhett Lashlee era, things can move at a quicker pace for the team.

“You can go at a different pace in the spring and over the summer, when we get here, we have 15 practice until school starts,” Lashlee said. “We basically have a spring football and then school starts, and we’re two weeks out from game. And at that point, you’ve kind of got to know who’s going to go into that first game, for the most part, or at least who has a chance early on to come on.

“So you’ve got to throw them in the deep end, they got to swim. If they can’t, then we’ll have to go the next option. But that’s what camp’s for, that’s our job. We’ve got 15 practices, 14 now, and we’re going to need all those guys and we got 41 new guys, so we’re going to need a lot of them.”

Mustangs ready for Year 2 of Lashlee era at SMU

The Mustangs are gearing up for the second season under Lashlee’s direction. SMU finished 7-6 in 2023, appearing in the New Mexico Bowl against BYU. Lashlee is the first SMU coach to lead the team to a bowl appearance in his first season since the 1980s.

With quarterback Preston Stone set to start for the first time in his career, SMU should be potent once again on offense. Aided by 25 transfers, the defense was revamped in the offseason to help Scott Symons’ elevate his unit to where the Mustangs need to be.

SMU opens the 2023 college football season at home against Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU on Sept. 2. The Mustangs are looking to continue the momentum they’ve built the last few seasons.
