Oklahoma defensive coordinator Ted Roof met with the media on Monday to preview Saturday’s matchup against SMU. The Sooners are coming off a 73-0 shutout win over Arkansas State.
As much as Roof got to play plenty of players against the Red Wolves, he knows this week’s opponent is a little more talented.
“They’re a well-coached football team,” Roof said of SMU. “They go fast. They hit you with a lot of different formations, a lot of different motions and also from a schematic standpoint, you know, a lot of variation in what they do. Their quarterback’s a guy that, you know, that was his second start, and is impressive. (Preston) Stone moves in the pocket well, is a quarterback run threat, and at the same time can make all the throws.”

At the skill position spots, SMU has a good bit of talent that was on display against the Bulldogs. The Mustangs had 10 different receivers catch passes and showed the depth of its running back room.
“They had some big plays at receiver, a lot of speed and the tight ends are really multidimensional,” Roof said. “You know, they’re receivers and they’re blockers. And then their running backs, I thought the depth at running back, they did, you know, broke some big runs. They had (L.J.) Johnson (Jr.) ran for 124 yards on 14 carries, I think, so the ability to do both, to run the ball and then, you know, take shots.”
Kickoff on Saturday between SMU and Oklahoma is set for 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
