SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee is ready for his first Battle for the Iron Skillet as head coach of the Mustangs. In the video below, Lashlee breaks down the SMUTCU matchup with reporters on Wednesday.

“There was nothing like it. I think at that time, I may be wrong, I think we’d lost like seven straight,” Lashlee said on Wednesday. “To go over to Ft. Worth, they had a really good ball club too, and played really well. Offensively, we did have a few turnovers. Defense was very opportunistic that day. We found a way to win a really close football game.

“I think that really kind of jump started our season. We ended up winning 10 games that year, but it all started by we started fast in that game. We just start to finish played really well. It’s tough. It was tight down to the end. Think they were almost in field goal range when we stopped them. Expect nothing different this week.”

SMU hoping to make it three straight over TCU

SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods said the players had a good response when getting back to a full practice on Tuesday. Woods said the long travel back and short week won’t matter come 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.

“Thought they had good energy this morning,” Woods told reporters. “Thought they were good last night at our walk-thru. You can tell it was a physical game, you can tell it was a really late night travel game. That was one where we got back into town at 5 a.m. Come Saturday morning when they kick it off, nobody’s going to care about that stuff. That’s been our message to them this week. We’ve got to pick up and keep moving.

“That’s part of the adversity they faced during two-a-days and kind of the planned stuff that we had since we got here. You gotta be able to finish strong and you’ve got to be able to respond to adversity. They’ve shown good signs so far.”
