WATCH: Rickey Hunley assesses SMU cornerbacks, defense during bye week
SMU cornerbacks coach and pass game coordinator Rickey Hunley met with the media during the bye week to assess his unit and the defense as the Mustangs start prep for TCU.
After falling to BYU, 18-15, there were no moral victories for SMU’s defensive staff even after a strong showing vs. the Cougars.
“Tough to watch, you know what I mean. Really felt like you let one get away as a team. We take pride in and have taken pride in playing well at home,” Hunley said this week. “So to be in that type of a game in front of our home crowd and our atmosphere, we wanted to do what we needed to do to come out with the win, and we just couldn’t get it done. Everybody wants to say that we played well defensively and did some good things and we agree that there’s some things that we did well, but there’s also other ways that we could have capitalized. We needed one more stop to put us in position for that game to go otherwise. We score on any one of the takeaways, we had opportunities in both settings to put both of those balls in the end zone.
“Our goal and our thought process is, we’re going to do whatever we need to do to be the best defense that we can, but we want to be the best team overall. It’s not a moral victory because you played well defensively, you lost the game.”
