WATCH: Scott Symons assesses SMU defense in bye week
SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons met with the media on Tuesday to break down how the Mustangs played against Charlotte and where things stand entering the bye week.
With SMU now on the bye week, the Mustangs have time to focus on some of the things that need improvement overall.
“I think it’s more about us than who we play next,” Symons said. “We’ve got a lot of respect for every single team we play. So right now we’re focusing more on just getting better at our base and our fundamentals and trying to get the guys fresh too because it’s going to be a long stretch with seven in a row and two and eight days on the road. So getting those guys ready for the task and just focus on getting better at us this week. And we’ll transition later on this weekend into East Carolina.”

With 1-4 East Carolina up next, SMU needs a good week of work on itself before moving onto preparations for the Pirates. It’s a short week as the Mustangs face ECU on Thursday night in Greenville, N.C.
“Sunday will be like a Tuesday practice for us,” Symons said. “We’ll use the next couple of days to start to introduce them. We respect them and watched them on film. Coach (Mike) Houston is a great coach, they’ve done a great job with that program and they’ve got good explosive weapons and talent. We respect everybody that we play, so we’ll start preparing for them here as we get into this week more starting (Wednesday) a little bit.”
