SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons met with the media on Tuesday to review the 55-0 win over Temple and look ahead to the Tulsa game. Check out the full interview in the video.

The Mustangs sit atop the conference ranks in total defense and are among the nation’s most improved defenses in 2023.

Tulsa offensively has more tools in the toolbox to put pressure on the top-ranked defensive in the American. Symons said it’ll be SMU’s toughest test in league play so far.

“They run the ball downhill and they throw it deep,” Symons told reporters. “This will be the best skill that we’ve seen in conference, by far. No. 19 Devan Williams on the outside, 4 (Marquis Shoulders) is back, two guys that really have juice. Then you have two quarterbacks, really three quarterbacks, that are playing when you look at Braylon Braxton, when you look at Cardell Williams. Both can run and provide different threats. Obviously, we saw Braxton last year in a different scheme, but I think they do a really good job.”

Tulsa hasn’t been as effective as it would like to be, sitting at 3-4 overall this season, but the downfield passing game is something that has Symons’ eyes. It’s been a year of missed opportunities for the Golden Hurricane.

“I think they’ve had some, here and there, some opportunities that if one or two plays in a game go different, it’s different, but they’re explosive,” Woods said. “Like I said, they can throw the ball, both those quarterbacks can push the ball downfield vertically, both have really strong arms. They have receivers that can run and their backs do a really good job being downhill and falling forward and keeping them ahead of the chains.”

SMU kicks off at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU looking to become bowl eligible with its sixth win of the season.
