SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons met with the media on Tuesday to recap the Memphis game and look ahead to Saturday’s matchup with Navy. The Midshipmen are coming off back-to-back wins and now look to upset the Mustangs on Senior Day.
“At the end of the day, it’s still discipline and fundamentals and tackling,” Symons said of defending Navy’s offense. “Last year, we were not a very good tackling team the whole season, so you’re playing an option team it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, this is going to be fun because we’ve tackled so well, so, let’s see how this goes.’ And we’ve tackled a lot better this year. I think our kids are confident. We’ll be multiple on defense and try to give them some different looks and be able to hop in and out of some things. And they’re going to be multiple on offense. It’s not the same offense.”
The Midshipmen have a new coaching staff this season and offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut is bringing in some new wrinkles.

“Their OC does a really good job, came from Kennesaw State,” Symons said. “There’s some Flexbone option, obviously, and then there’s some gun principles, and then they do a good job with it. So, I mean, the basic fundamentals of football for us hasn’t hasn’t changed. But yeah, it’s not like you’re actually going to run everything in the playbook on it this week. But there will be times where we run some base stuff and try to do a good job fitting it up with.”
SMU and Navy kick off at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2 inside Ford Stadium on Saturday. If the Mustangs win, they advance to the AAC Championship Game, where they’ll play the winner of Friday’s Tulane and UTSA matchup.
