A Father's Day Special: Talking football and life with Shane and Frank Beamer

There are few names in college football that are as recognizable as the Beamers. But what did growing up in a household that went on to produce two Power 5 head coaches look like?
In a Father’s Day special, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer and his father and legendary college football coach Frank Beamer peeled back the curtains. In this Gamecock Central exclusive, the two reflected on the challenges of juggling a family while also striving to be the best coaches they can be, life lessons taught and learned along the way, and memories that will stay with their family for years to come.

“You were so driven to be successful and to prove that you could be a good coach that sometimes you’d put other things aside,” said Frank. “I think Shane is a lot better at handling that stuff in that situation than I was. It all goes back to (my wife) Cheryl. She was the one that could always keep me balanced; tell me when I should be doing something else.”

While Shane has been extremely open about the love for his children and family through social media, he was always grateful for the memories he created with his father. Memories that go back to when Frank was still coaching at Murray State.
“I never once felt slighted growing up or that we took a backseat to anything,” said Shane. “I was always able to go to his office (and) the locker room and be around. When I got older I was able to be on the sidelines and travel to away games. Those are a lot of my memories. Being a little kid, whether we were at Murray State riding the bus to all of the Ohio Valley Conference schools, those were fun experiences.”
