Antwane Wells ready for his next challenge at South Carolina
South Carolina receiver Antwane Wells Jr. never wants to feel settled. He wants to feel comfortable being uncomfortable.
South Carolina was attractive to him for that exact reason after putting his name in the transfer portal.
“I definitely didn’t think I’d be playing Power 5 football. I always knew what I had inside of me but other people didn’t think that of me,” Wells said. “So I had to take a different route.”
Wells Jr. put up prolific numbers at FCS powerhouse James Madison, settling single-season records for receiving yards (1,250) and touchdowns (15) while tying the school record for 83 receptions in a season.
When he left the program this offseason he took his 116 receptions, 1,853 yards and 21 touchdowns with him.
That level of production, FCS or not, is eye-popping and its what the Gamecocks liked in hi as they tried to add more depth to the receiver room.
The Gamecocks need more offensive playmakers and Wells was yearning for his next challenge, which made his commitment a match made in heaven.
“I don’t ever want to get settled and be comfortable with dominating at one level. I want to be able to enhance my game and learn as much as possible,” he said.

“At JMU they taught me a lot of things and helped me with a lot of things but I felt like my time there was done. Playing there kind of got easy and I don’t want to take the easy route. I want to take the harder route.”
Wells understands the opportunity he has at South Carolina and doesn’t want to waste it.
The facilities and resources amaze him, more specifically the nutrition aspect to it.
“The food is amazing. Right after workouts they got shakes already made for you. After that you shower up and a buffet in front of you. Before you workout you got breakfast where they’ll make any type of sandwich you want and customize it,” Wells said. “Just the facility and definitely the coaches, also. It’s more motivational coaches like D-Mo. It’s wonderful. Everything about it is definitely an upgrade for sure.”
The Gamecocks can certainly use the level of Wells’ production after an offensive year where the receiver corps was largely up and down.
Playing his role is Wells’ main focus, but he understands the opportunity to get on the field early in his South Carolina career.
“I’m not really looking at this to be a star,” Wells said. “I just want to come in here and play football and have fun and enjoy this experience.”
