As disappointing as last week’s season opener was, South Carolina is moving forward.
On Wednesday, Gamecocks coordinators met with the media and the message from all three was similar. That message being that it’s time to flush Week 1 and get better.
“I’m not blaming anyone. I’m blaming myself,” said offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. “If you wanna blame someone then put it on me. It’s my job to make sure these guys play well.”

After allowing nine sacks this past weekend, South Carolina has been playing musical chairs this week in practice in hopes to find the best five on the offensive line that work well with each other.
“That whole problem from last week is being addressed as we go,” added Loggains. “And it will be fluid. If it was an easy thing, it wouldn’t have happened last week but it’s gonna be a process.”
Defensively, early in-game injuries plagued USC but young players such as defensive back Jalon Kilgore were ready when their numbers were called. Heading into Week 2, it’s about finishing plays.

“(North Carolina’s) skill players were talented,” said defensive coordinator Clayton White. “Tackling is always gonna be a concern for every coach in America in Game 1. I would give it probably a ‘C/C+’ based on a few runs that did pop out that could’ve been 40 or 50-yard runs. Instead they were 12. To me, if those runs got out then it’s definitely a poor performance. But I thought our guys tackled okay.”
Special teams coordinator Pete Lembo has spent nearly half of his coaching career at the FCS level and knows how dangerous Furman can be on special teams. A team who last season led the country in FCS in blocked kicks.

“They’re gonna come in here and they’re not gonna be bright-eyed because of being in a big stadium and a loud environment,” said Lembo. “They’re just gonna do what they do. If they do it well, they’ll have a chance to win. If they don’t do it well enough, they’ll just go back to work next week and get ready for the next (game) and not blink because that’s how they’ve been trained.”
While it’s still to be seen what South Carolina will do with their offensive line this weekend, one thing to keep an eye are both tackle positions. Nick Gargiulo has experience of playing left tackle and Jakai Moore has experience of playing right tackle.
