Chad Terrell tears ACL for third time, out for season
Gamecocks tight end/wide receiver Chad Terrell tore his ACL and will miss the 2022 season, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer announced Tuesday during a press conference.
“That’s his third unfortunately of his career, so he’ll be out for the season,” Beamer said. “I really hate it for that young man. We told the team, he’ll still continue to have a role on the team. I’ve got so much respect for him, a guy that’s in his sixth year in this program, I believe. Had been through, this will be his third ACL, had come back from two ACLs, accepted a position change during spring practice, really excelled in that role as a tight end for us, and had had a good preseason and put us in a position to play and have a role on the field on this year’s team.
“Certainly hate it for him but have so much respect for Chad and the way that he’s battled to put himself in position to play. We talked about it in front of the team, the respect that we have for him, and the impact that he can have going forward, the fighter that he is. He’s still heavily involved in our team and has a role without a doubt but just won’t be playing on Saturdays for us this upcoming season.”
Asked if Terrell would have to take a medical hardship and effectively end his career, or if he would be back, Beamer said they were still looking into that in terms of if Terrell would want to come back for another year and if it would be allowed from an eligibility standpoint.
The Mississippi native played his high school football in Georgia for South Paulding High and is in his sixth year with the program.
For his career in Columbia, he caught seven passes for 76 yards, having appeared in a total of 27 games.
Terrell was hampered by injuries during his career with the Gamecock football program.
In 2018, he tore the ACL in his left knee during spring drills. Following his recovery from that injury, he tore the ACL in his right knee during the spring of 2020.
Due to depth issues this past spring, Terrell saw action at tight end and did well, scoring a touchdown in the Garnet & Black Game.
