When the wins came in bunches, so did a heap of awards. That won’t be the case this year, though.

This time last year, South Carolina came away with multiple SEC awards, including Lamont Paris winning SEC Coach of the Year, two players on All-SEC Teams and one on the All-Freshman Team. But fast forward to this season, after a dead-last finish in the conference standings, the postseason honors are scarce for the Gamecocks.

But if there’s been one bright spot in an otherwise down year, it’s been Collin Murray-Boyles. On Monday, the Gamecocks’ star forward was named to the All-SEC Second Team. Additionally, Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the conference.

After a strong first year in which he made the All-Freshman Team, Murray-Boyles has been even better in his sophomore season with the Gamecocks. He leads the team in almost every major statistical category, including points (16.7), rebounds (8.1), blocks (1.4) and steals (1.5).

Even when stacked up against other players in the SEC, Murray-Boyles holds his own. He ranks eighth in scoring, third in rebounding, first in field goal percentage and ninth in blocks.

Murray-Boyles has also finished with the third-most double-doubles in the SEC this season. His eight double-doubles only trail Auburn’s Johni Broome (17) and Kentucky’s Amari Williams (10).

Before a seven-point effort in a 75-65 loss to Tennessee on Saturday, Murray-Boyles had been playing some of the best basketball of his career. Over the previous four games, he averaged nearly 27 points, with a career-high 35 against Arkansas on March 1.

With Murray-Boyles high on many NBA Draft boards, he could turn pro after this season ends. But first, he still has at least one more game to go, as the Gamecocks will face Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday. Tip-off from Nashville is at 1 p.m. on SEC Network.
