When South Carolina learned on Tuesday night that they were placed at No.14 in the latest college football playoff rankings, their playoff hopes all but went out the window.

Falling short of cracking what will be the first year of a 12-team FBS playoffs, many, inducing fans, players, and Shane Beamer, expressed their frustration. Well, add in Columbia, SC Mayor Daniel Rickenmann to that club too.

“The Gamecocks should be in the college football playoffs,” Rickenmann shared on Facebook on Thursday. “The CFP committee’s recent ranking is a mistake. For this reason, I’m introducing a resolution of disapproval at the next city council meeting. The Gamecocks deserve a spot in the playoffs and we’ve been excited because of their hard work this entire season.”

So what exactly does this actually mean?

If such a resolution were to be approved, it would be non-binding as it relates to the College Football Playoff committee. The committee is a collection of 13 people with “experience” as coaches, players, college administrators, athletic directors and journalists who are tasked with selecting the inaugural 12-team playoff team.

“Columbia is proud of our flagship university and its positive impact on our state. This team deserves recognition and the committee made its decision behind closed doors without a clear process. Throughout the season, the Gamecocks have consistently exceeded expectations and fought through adversity.”

Rickenmann, who is in his first term as mayor of Columbia, is an alum of the University of South Carolina.

“Clearly strength of schedule, losses to unranked teams, and margin of victory were not taken into account. The committee’s decision will result in lost benefit to our community which will be detrimental to Columbia.”
