Dakereon Joyner tells South Carolina fans who they should keep an eye on
On Monday, South Carolina running back Dakereon Joyner appeared on “Garnet Nights Unplugged” and shared high praise for Gamecock quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
“The guy I think fans should be excited about is LaNorris Sellers. Quarterback out of South Florence,” said Joyner. “He’s a guy that I believe is gonna take this thing over eventually. He’ll have a year to sit behind Spencer Rattler and Luke Doty and will just learn but I think that’s a guy who will really take the city of Columbia over. I have a lot of faith in him. Being a dual-threat quarterback, I see a lot of talent in him and a lot of maturity.”
The four-star freshman arrived on campus this past spring and impressed many with his arm strength and his legs. His play didn’t only turn heads in the stands but on the field as well as both coaches and players have liked what they’ve seen from the young QB.

Beginning his career as a quarterback himself, before bouncing to wide receiver and now to running back, Joyner knows firsthand what Sellers is experiencing as a freshman. Which is why he’s made sure to lookout for him in anyway he can.

“His locker is two lockers down from mine so I talk to him often. When he has great days and when he has bad days, I’m always there to just pick his head up. One thing that I always tell him is just to stay true to yourself. Don’t ever let someone tell you what you can’t do in this era of playing quarterback. Just to stay true to yourself man and to never give up on your dreams. If you want something then go get it.”

One thing that Sellers told me during the Gamecock Central Kickoff Party on Aug. 19 is that the game is starting to slowdown for him. While it’s possible that Sellers could be used in different offensive packages this season, he should have the luxury of not feeling as much pressure on him this season. A season that should allow him to continue to grow and learn from veteran quarterbacks and players around him.
“As a quarterback, you’re gonna have your days. You’re gonna have your great days and you’re gonna have your bad days. But at the end of the day, it’s all about your confidence. I also tell him that he’s gonna be the leader of the team so never get too high and never get too low. You always have to be even-keeled as a quarterback because the team goes as you go.”
