Former Florida head coach Dan Mullen on Tuesday confirmed an earlier GamecockCentral.com report that he will not be the next offense coordinator for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

While Mullen’s name has been bandied about online for Shane Beamer’s open assistant vacancy, GamecockCentral.com reported on Sunday that Mullen “is not expected to be the next offensive coordinator at South Carolina.”

During a Tuesday appearance with Chris Childers and Rick Neuheisel on “Full Ride” on ESPNU Radio, Mullen addressed the talk.

“They’re going to hire a great OC,” Mullen said. “It’s just not going to be me.”

The former Mississippi State and Florida head coach currently serves as a studio analyst for ESPN, with the network formally announcing his hire back in August.

Reporting by GamecockCentral.com noted that the Mullen and Beamer families are close, with Mullen visiting Columbia twice in 2022 to meet with the Gamecocks staff and take in a game inside Williams-Brice Stadium. However, Mullen is still not going to join Beamer’s staff at USC.

After serving as an offensive coordinator at Florida for four seasons (2005-2008), Mullen got his first head job at Mississippi State in 2009. After a lengthy stint in Starkville, he moved on to Florida, where he served as head coach for four seasons.

Mullen’s career head coaching record currently sits at 103-61, with a 7-3 mark in bowl games. His Florida team earned an appearance in the SEC Championship Game in 2020, and he was named the SEC Coach of the Year for his efforts in 2014 at Mississippi State.

Beamer is in the midst of a search for an offensive coordinator following Marcus Satterfield’s departure to join Matt Rhule’s staff at Nebraska.

During a media availability on Sunday, Beamer gave the latest on his timeline for hiring an offensive coordinator.

“Certainly, we know we can’t wait forever and we’re not going to, either,” he said. “Everyone wants it done tomorrow but I want to make sure he’s the right fit for everyone involved not just in the short term but the long term as well and what’s best for South Carolina football.”

Beamer also noted that the offensive coordinator position in Columbia – heading into year three of his regime – has been one that seems desirable to assistant coaches.

“It’s a lot more appealing now. There’s a lot more interest in it now than it was two years ago when I was trying to hire an offensive coordinator,” he noted. “The amount of people who’ve reached out to me like sitting head coaches to NFL coaches to current coordinators has been pretty impressive.”
