With fall camp for South Carolina just weeks away, expectations for this year’s Gamecocks defense continue to grow. Expectations that senior linebacker Debo Williams didn’t shy away from when asked at SEC Media Days.

“As a defensive leader, I want straight donuts. I don’t even want teams scoring and that’s just how I feel about it,” said Williams. “The offense is gonna do their thing but it’s up to us to really have it to a point where the offense doesn’t have to work that hard.”

Adding depth and proven talent to multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball, to go along with some promising young stars, it’s understandable why Williams feels the way that he does. Especially when you add in the fact that South Carolina is returning eight starters on defense as well.

“We have a bunch of veterans playing with guys (who’ve played) three to four years,” said Williams. “The connection (is) there. I know I can count on my d-linemen with my life depending on it (and) my defensive backs. We’re family-oriented and we’re all going to give it our all when we’re out there, for sure”

That familiarity doesn’t only create trust but it also creates a better understanding of the guy you’re playing alongside.

“I know these guys. If they’re having a bad day I can push them. If something happens in the game I know what ticks will (get) them (going).”

While South Carolina is expected to picked towards the bottom of the conference when the SEC preseason polls are released later this week, Williams isn’t worried about the outside noise.

“It used to (bother me) but I don’t even care anymore. I don’t care what people have to say. None of that. (Like with me), nobody knew who I was before I got here. (You) work and we’ll create room for you. That’s one of our mottos. We’re just gonna play and we’re gonna ball out.”
