Deebo Samuel lands big contract from 49ers
Deebo Samuel’s impasse with the San Francisco 49ers is over, and the former Gamecock football standout has landed himself a significant payday.
According to a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapaport, Samuel’s new deal with San Francisco is a 3 year extension that has a maximum value of $73.5 million over the life of the agreement.
“This was not easy,” Rapaport noted on Twitter. “From a trade request to totally rebuilding the relationship. But agent Tory Dandy and 49ers brass deal with it all. In the end, no trade. Samuel gets paid. And everything works out.”
The guaranteed money in the new contract, which will end when Samuel is 29 years old, is $58.1 million.
Rapaport previously reported back in April that Samuel had requested a trade from the organization, which drafted him 36th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite that, he had reported to the team’s offseason training camp. General manager John Lynch expressed optimism at that point, according to ESPN.com, that the team would be able to complete a deal with Samuel.

The 2021 season was a breakout one for Samuel under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He caught 77 balls for over 1,400 yards as a receiver – leading the league in yards per catch – but also drew accolades for his work running the football for the 49ers. Samuel amassed 365 yards on 59 carries and set an NFL record for number of rushing touchdowns posted by a wide receiver with 8.
At South Carolina, Samuel was a standout wide receiver for Gamecock football, earning first-team All-SEC honors by the league’s coaches as a returner and second-team All-SEC honors as a wideout during his senior season. For his career in Columbia, the South Carolina native caught 148 balls for 2,076 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also added 7 scores on the ground as well as 4 kick returns for a touchdown – which gives him the school record in that special teams category.
Samuel played his high school football at Chapman High School in the Palmetto State. The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally-weighed industry-generated average, ranked Samuel as the nation’s 482nd-best prospect nationally, the number 80 wide receiver in the country, and the 14th-best prospect in the state of South Carolina in the 2014 class.
The All-Pro selection also became just the third player in NFL history to post 1,000 yards receiving, 5 receiving touchdowns, and 5 rushing touchdowns in the same season.
