Deebo Samuel reacts to advancing to Super Bowl LVIII
For the second time in his young NFL career, former South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel is headed to the Super Bowl.
“I don’t only want to reach (the Super Bowl) I want to win it,” Samuel said following San Francisco’s 34-31 against Detroit. “That’s the goal. That’s what we set out to do since the beginning of the year.”
Despite playing through a shoulder injured that he sustained during the divisional round the previous week, Samuel led the 49ers with eight receptions for 89 yards. He also added seven yards rushing on three carries. His play, especially to start the second half, gave San Francisco a spark to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit.

“I don’t think there was any concern (at halftime). We just knew that we had to go out in the second half and score points. Defense had to get off the field. Starting the third quarter with three points and then (our defense) was able to make a big play with the fumble and then we were able to go down and score (again)… We were down 17 at half but we were gonna do whatever it took to get this win and we went out there and did it.”

Samuel is one of two Gamecocks who’ll be advancing to this year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas. His 49ers teammate and former South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw will be getting set to play in his first career Super Bowl. Kinlaw recorded two tackles, including a tackle for loss, in the win.

The two will look to become the first Gamecocks to win a Super Bowl since Ernest Jones and Kyle Markway did so two seasons ago in Super Bowl LVI with the Los Angeles Rams.
Samuel is in his fifth season in the NFL while Kinlaw is in his fourth. Both players were drafted by the 49ers, where they’ve each played their entire NFL careers to this point.
