South Carolina is playing a big ACC opponent at a neutral site, and the details were officially released Wednesday afternoon.

The Gamecocks will play Virginia Tech in the first week of the season on a neutral floor with the game scheduled for Nov. 10 at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.

It will be part of the Hoop Hall of Fame Shootout. It will include the South Carolina and Virgina Tech game but also games with Charlotte and Liberty then Virginia and Florida.

Game times will be announced later. Tickets will go on sale in July.

The arena opened in 2005 and the November game will be the first game the program plays in the Spectrum Center.

It’s a game with plenty of headlines and connections with Mike Young the head coach of the Hokies and someone with South Carolina ties.

Young was the long-time head coach at Wofford, turning that program into one of the best mid-majors in the country and a viable tournament team multiple times.

Young and Gamecocks’ head coach Lamont Paris crossed paths for two seasons with Young at Wofford and Paris just starting his tenure at Chattanooga in 2018 and 2019.

The Hokies are coming off a down year relative to what they had been, finishing 19-15 overall and 8-12 in the ACC. They were No. 75 in the NET rankings and No. 80 in KenPom.

These two programs have met 31 times in their history with South Carolina leading the all-time series 18-13. The last time they played was 1997 when South Carolina won 74-73.

It’ll be one of at least three neutral site games the Gamecocks will play over the first few weeks of the season.

South Carolina will reportedly open the season Nov. 6 at home against USC Upstate with the Virginia Tech game Nov. 10.

They’ll host VMI three days later before playing DePaul on Nov. 17 in a Phoenix MTE with either Grand Canyon or San Fransisco waiting two days later.

South Carolina also has games at Clemson, Western Kentucky and East Carolina on the docket this season and a home game against George Washington. There are other games that will pop up to round out the non-conference schedule.
