Dowell Loggains eager to begin recruiting for South Carolina
When newly-hired South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains was out of the NFL, he had a decision to make.
He could stay away from an on-field coaching role for a bit, biding his time as an analyst somewhere. Or he could try something he had always been curious about, which is recruiting.
Loggains chose the latter, jumping to his alma mater as tight ends coach while hoping to prove he could recruit.

“When the Arkansas opportunity came back to go back to my alma mater and coach, it surprised a lot of people that i was going to become the tight ends coach,” Loggains said. “But it was an SEC job and a chance to prove to people I could recruit. I needed to do that. I know the football aspect of it. But I wanted to prove could recruit at a high level.”
So far, he’s recruited well during his time with the Razorbacks, something he and South Carolina hopes to continue.
Of Arkansas’s top four rated players in the 2023 class, two are tight ends in four-star Shamar Easter (No. 152 nationally) and also Luke Hasz (No. 208). He also helped land Ty Washington, a three-star prospect out of Georgia.

Recruiting is something Loggains has always been curious about, dating back to his NFL days. As a Titans assistant, he spent time with then-Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin and learned about that operation as well.
“I got to see the nuts and bolts of his program from the inside out. It made me confident that I wanted to go coach college football,” he said. “When you’ve never recruited, you’re worried like, ‘What’s this recruiting like?’ You’ve heard horror stories. But I’ve enjoyed this process. I needed that to say this is what I wanted to do.”

Loggains had a brief stint as an analyst with Franklin’s Penn State program before taking the Arkansas gig in 2021.
“You go to college football and you’re accountable for your roster. If you don’t have a good enough roster, that’s your fault. You determine how well and how hard you recruit,” he said. “You determine the success you have, you have a little bit more ownership in the roster-building part of it.”
Loggains’ first real recruiting test is this weekend with the Gamecocks hosting a swath of high-level high school, junior college and transfer portal prospects.
It’s his first recruiting weekend as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator and a chance to help land impact pieces.
“(Recruits) feel sincere versus fake,” Loggains said. “They feel recruiting versus relationships. We have such an awesome program to sell, such an awesome head coach to sell, an awesome fan base, there’s no game day atmosphere in America like this place and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
