Dowell Loggains shares what South Carolina has done differently in recent weeks
After falling to (2-4), South Carolina’s backs were up against the wall.
With nowhere else to go but forward, the Gamecocks have slowly fought their way out of the corner winning their last two games. And perhaps some of that can be created to South Carolina switching their routine up as of late.
“We’ve changed the schedule the last two weeks,” shared offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. “Two home games and we’re 2-0 (since making those changes). Shane Beamer has tweaked things around and we do different stuff. We’ve gone and seen a movie a couple of times, which we hadn’t done.”

But it hasn’t only been trying to find ways to to keep the team together through adversity. There’s also been a focus on adjusting their coaching methods to help player’s learn better.
“For us, coach Beamer has preached that sometimes less is more. So maybe it’s less volume and more execution. Or, maybe it’s less volume of running (a play) at practice so that we have more detail. Maybe it’s less practice reps and more walk-through reps. Maybe it’s more time playing together.”

Regardless of what some may say about the competition they’ve played in those two weeks, change can be a good thing. Breaking out of the norm has created a new sense of urgency, in all three phases, that was missing from this team in October.

“Being maybe starter in preparation, starting with the head coach doing a little bit less and doing what we do better. I think it’s people playing together more. It’s having the same starting offensive line for the past two to three weeks in a row now. Well-coached teams get better as the season goes. You see teams who buy into what their head coach is about and get better at the end of the season. I think that’s why South Carolina has been pretty good in November and December these past few years.”

Another thing that helps with the changes made to South Carolina’s routine is that they play their final four games at home. Not only can that help with keeping the consistency they’ve found over the past two weeks, but they’re also able to play in front of their home crowd.
“That atmosphere in that stadium is as good as any I’ve ever been in in my life in pro football or college football. I think that’s a big part of it. There’s a confidence level when you walk into Willy-B. My kids feel it. It’s a special, special place. When you have home(field)-advantage like we have… when you walk into that place our guys think whoever that opponent is going to have a really hard time beating us in our home stadium.”
