Shane Beamer reviews South Carolina vs. UNC on Sunday teleconference

Less than 24 hours after a 31-17 loss to North Carolina, Shane Beamer met with the media on a teleconference call. Here’s everything he had to say.

Beamer said the team has to play and coach better. Faced a perfect storm of what couldn’t happen and it all went wrong. Proud of the guys for battling. Effort wasn’t in question. Knew adversity would hit at some point. As bad as it looks at times, they had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter. Optimistic moving forward.

19 players that played meaningful snaps for the first time ever as a Gamecock. Doesn’t count Stone Blanton in that. 13 were on offense or defense alone. Those guys will continue to get better.

Lost way too many 1-on-1 opportunities at every position.

For players of the week, the staff came together and picked Spencer Rattler and Xavier Legette for the offense. Gave them a chance to win. Luke Doty was included as well for his play at wide receiver. Defensively, Blanton, Debo Williams, OD Fortune and Jalon Kilgore all stood out to the staff. Mitch Jeter, Fortune and Legette showed out on special teams.

As for injuries, Nick Emmanwori and Juice Wells are both questionable for Furman. Cason Henry and Mo Kaba will be out for awhile. Beamer wouldn’t comment any further on Kaba out of respect for him.

Said they have to coach the players up better with technique and errors. There were a lot of mental errors that came from the older guys. Always about competition. That means the older guys and younger guys have to get better. If the younger guys give them a chance to win they will get in the game.

Talking about sacks, one of them was a missed assignment by a running back. Another was Rattler running before he needed to. The others were on the offensive line.

Beamer spoke about the timeout he called in a goal line situation early in the first quarter. South Carolina had too many men on the field. They tried to go goal line formation and messed up. Said they have to do a better job as coaches.

Markee Anderson, who was absent from the travel roster, had a little bit of an injury in practice that caused him to miss this week. Ahmarean Brown is probable for this week.
