Everything Wofford coach Shawn Watson said after the South Carolina game
Wofford head coach Shawn Watson spoke to the media following the Terriers’ road loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. Here’s what Watson had to say following the 56-12 defeat:
Opening Statement from Shawn Watson
“My first thought is really proud of our kids, they came out and played, especially a really spirited first half. Just got worn down by a really good football team. I think Shane’s got a real-deal football team. He’s got all the pieces. He’s got an exceptional defense that has skill at every level.”

“And he’s got a really good offense and they do a great job of managing the young quarterback and using all the pieces that surround him. So they wore us down after a while.”
“But I go back to our guys, really really proud of our kids, the way they opened up the game. They have always been that resilient bunch, I’m just really proud of them. The way they came out and the way they played, the way they were at halftime. Through the third quarter, they were really into it and just really appreciate our seniors once again.”
“Our seniors have allowed us to begin to turn our program. It’s not what any of us wanted, but those kids have been through a lot. And seeing what we were able to accomplish this year, I think they’re walking out the door feeling like they have started us in the right direction. I love them, and I appreciate them. They’ve been phenomenal in their time spent with me and the staff.”

“To the younger players, they’ve been great examples. I’m going to miss every one of them.”
On the first quarter chunk plays
“Those were huge confidence plays because the kids, I think everyone aspires to be at a level like this and play in a stadium like that in front of a crowd like that, and those kids really answered the call. Kyle (Watkins) has been a tremendous player for us all year long. He was able to rip off a big play and it really got the momentum started. On defense, I believe it was Amir that came up with the interception. He’s been a great player for us.”
“Again, those are two of the seniors in that senior class that have helped us to really begin to flip our program. I always use the word “begin” because we just really have begun. It’ll be our second recruiting class, we’ll see what we can do with it.
On the performance of Kyle Watkins
“He played a great game. He is functionally one of the best receivers I have ever been around. He’s got a really good speed but he’s got great functional speed. He’s just a natural ball-catcher. I hope he gets an opportunity to play at the next level. I hope somebody will take a look at him because he’s worth it. He’s got the work ethic and he’s a really good football player.
On the near-successful fake field goal attempt
“We told our kids, and that’s the way we’ve been all year, we’re going to be aggressive in our thought process. Mitch Doolittle does a good job with our special teams, he came up with a really good plan and we just had a flinch penalty and that was a touchdown if we don’t flinch. Got a guy out there that got a little nervous in the service.”
