South Carolina men’s basketball is staying busy Saturday as they host a five-star prospect who grew up in the Midlands. According to sources, McDonald’s All-American Blythewood native Julian Philips (Link Academy) is currently on an unofficial visit with his family.

After spending his first three years attending Blythewood High School where he shined for the Bengals the 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward enrolled at Link Academy in Missouri. Ranked 16th overall nationally for the 2022 recruiting class by On3, Phillips was originally committed to LSU but was released from his letter of intent after the Tigers fired Will Wade last month as head coach.

Phillips was offered a scholarship by Frank Martin and the previous staff but the Gamecocks were not on his shortlist of schools. In addition to LSU, Phillips was strongly considering Florida State, Tennessee, and Southern Cal.

With the departures of Keyshawn Bryant, Erik Stevenson, Ta’Quan Woodley, Wildens Leveque, Devin Carter, Jermaine Couisnard and Mike Green this offseason, first-year head coach Lamont Paris has his work cut out for him but has been active in just a month on the job.

Perhaps his biggest addition since arriving has been hiring former Gamecocks two-time captain Carey Rich as his special assistant. Gamecock Central was told Rich’s long relationship with the Phillip family played a big role in helping to get the five-star prospect on campus this weekend.
