For a second straight year, former South Carolina Gamecock Landon Powell has led North Greenville to the DII College World Series.

Powell, who is in his ninth season as head coach of the the Crusaders, led NGU to their first national title in program history last season. This season, North Greenville is coming off their second straight Conference Carolinas regular season title and are ranked No.2 in the nation with a record of (49-9).

The DII College World Series is set to begin on Saturday, June 3 in Cary, N.C. Powell. The Crusaders are scheduled to play their first game against the No. 7 seeded Augustana University Vikings on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Like DI baseball, the DII College World Series is broken up into two brackets of four teams. The four teams will play in a double-elimination tournament with the winner of each advancing to play in a best-of-three championship series.

North Greenville is 5-1 this postseason with their only loss coming against the University of Mount Olive. That forced them to have to beat Mount Olive twice, in a double-header, in order to advance to Super Regionals.

Last season, Powell was named the national Division II Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He led North Greenville to a (54-10) record en route to a DII College World Series title. Including a condensed season in 2020 that was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Powell has won 349 games during his tenure at UNG.

But Powell isn’t the only Gamecock on staff. Former USC great Trey Dyson (1999-2002) and former Gamecocks first baseman Matt Williams (2014-18) are assistants at North Greenville. Former USC pitcher Jon Coutlangus had also been an assistant under Powell from 2015-2021.
