Some might be wonder how’s Miller signing with a team less than three weeks before the NFL Draft. On Friday, On3’s national college football host Andy Staples shared that’s because Miller isn’t eligible for this year’s draft. Something that was recently discovered by Miller’s camp.
Because of the eligibility gaffe, Miller was not eligible for the upcoming (NFL) draft. He should have been in last year’s draft, and failing that, he was eligible for last year’s supplemental draft (though no one knew it). That meant Miller wasn’t a potential late-round pick. He was a free agent, free to sign with any team he wished right now.
It also meant that unlike a drafted player whose salary is slotted, (Miller’s agent Tom) Mills could negotiate with multiple teams and get Miller the best possible deal. Plus, Miller would get to choose his team rather than the other way around. He could pick the city, and he could pick the roster that gave him the best chance of still having a job come September.
