During a Thursday appearance on GC Live, former South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia shared his thoughts on what he’s liked about the Gamecocks offense and where he’s seen the biggest area of growth from Week 1.
“The protection is hands down the better part of the operation,” said Garcia. “I think Spencer is doing a better job of not looking at the rush like I thought he did in the first (game). I caught a lot of (flack) for saying that on Twitter/X but I call it like I see it.”

Three games in, Rattler has completed 77 of 108 passes for 954 yards and four touchdowns. His two interceptions both came last week against Georgia during a time in which the Gamecocks were playing in desperation mode down by two scores late. His incredible play has South Carolina’s passing attack ranked eighth best in the country.
“I thought the first half (against Georgia) was an amazing part of that game. In my opinion, I thought that was the best Spencer has played in the garnet and black uniform. People kept reminding me of the Tennessee game (last year). Yeah, that was a good game but I thought Spencer played his best game in that first half last week… He was getting the ball out of his hand, he was accurate, he was making good decisions on time. He was just lighting it up. I wish we were able to continue that but obviously people make halftime adjustments and I thought Georgia started bringing some more pressure and that’s just part of the game. But I thought we learned a lot from this past week and I think we have a lot to look forward to.”

One of the biggest disappointments that South Carolina continues to face is their inability to get the run game going. Through three games, the Gamecocks rank third to last in the country out of 130 teams. If USC continues to struggle this weekend, at any point, you need to be able to roll with the punches. How do you combat that? By doing what offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has shown with the quick game.
“Just getting the ball out of Spencer’s hand quick. If the line isn’t blocking they way that you would prefer then get the ball out of your quarterback’s hand and put it in the hands of your playmakers. Let the wide receivers block downfield because it’s a lot easier to block defensive backs than 350 pound linemen.”
