Former South Carolina WR Ahmarean Brown earns minicamp invite

Former South Carolina wide receiver Ahmarean Brown is still chasing his dream of playing in the NFL. A year after going undrafted, Brown has earned a rookie minicamp invite by the Philadelphia Eagles, his agent Sarah Jackson told GamecockCentral on Sunday.

While not a rookie, Jackson says Brown will come in for a tryout with other rookies without a contract. If the Eagles like what they see from the former Gamecock wideout, he could earn a contract.

Following the conclusion of last year’s NFL Draft, Brown was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent. Appearing in all three preseason games for Cleveland, his only two catches for 26 yards came in the Browns preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. He would be released on August 27. Since then, he’s worked out with several NFL teams and was even signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad this past season.

Brown also had the option of playing in the United Football League. Last summer, he was drafted in the eighth round by the Birmingham Stallions. The Stallions, who are coached by Skip Holtz, the son of former Gamecock head coach Lou, own Browns’ UFL rights. If Brown wanted to pursue playing in the UFL, the Stallions would have the first crack at him.

While it’s nice to know that there’s a “Plan B” out there for the former South Carolina wide receiver, he’s hoping “Plan A” will work out. A plan that involves making an NFL roster.

Standing at just 5-8, 170 pounds, Brown is coming off his best season as a Gamecock after catching 26 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown. It was his best season of his college career since his freshman year at Georgia Tech in 2020 when he caught seven touchdown passes before transferring to South Carolina ahead of the 2021 season.

In addition to contributing at wide receiver, Brown knows that he’ll have to make a difference on special teams in order to stick with a team. A phase of the game he told GamecockCentral in April that he enjoys playing after playing three seasons for former South Carolina special teams coordinator Pete Lembo. 

“Playing for coach (Pete) Lembo was one of the biggest blessings in my life. Playing at the next level, for a guy like me, I’m gonna have to play special teams and it’s something that I’m wiling do. Especially with the new format for the kickoff. Just to be able to get the ball in my hands to be able to make some moves, I think it’s gonna be exciting… I can excel not only on kickoff but on punt (returns) too.”
